Euterpe Ensemble Presents:
Witches' Brew:
An exploration of dark & light in works by female Baroque composers
Lindsay Chapel at First Church in Cambridge
11 Garden St. Cambridge, MA 02138
Featuring works by Barbara Strozzi, Julie Duval, Anna Amalia, Anna Bon
& Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre.
Transporting the chills and thrills of spooky season back to the Baroque era, this program highlights contrasts between dark and light in the diverse works by female composers of the 17th and 18th-centuries. Our concert opens with Barbara Strozzi's religious song "Salve, Sancta Caro" ("Hail, Holy Flesh") performed on instruments. Our harpsichordist Kevin Lubin compiled and transcribed select instrumental movements from Julie Duval's rarely performed opera Les Génies ou Les Caractères de l'amour ("The Geniuses or Love's Characters") into a suite. Then enjoy two light, Gallant-era flute sonatas by Anna Amalia, Princess of Prussia, and Anna Bon (both performed on violin). Finally, bask in the beautiful, melancholic melodies of Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre's Violin Sonata No. 1 in D Minor--a piece composed during a time of immense personal grief in De La Guerre's life.
We hope to see you there!
